Jesus often taught about the teaching of Pharisees and scribes. They were a people that always looked to find fault in others. They asked Jesus why His disciples did not walk by the tradition of the elders. It was a belief you should not eat before washing your hands. They had a legitimate argument; Jesus did not condemn this belief. Jesus wanted them to understand how they kept the commandments of men and not the commandments of God. They said they were serving God, but their actions denied their claim. Jesus responded by sharing the words of the prophet Isaiah. In the Bible, St. Mark 7:6-9. "He answered and said unto them, Well hath Isaiah prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoreth me with lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such things like things ye do. And he said to them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition."
Going to Church is a tradition if you go for any reason other than to worship God. You missed the mark. We enter the Church to worship and depart to do the work of the Church. Serving God with a purpose can break the tradition of men.
